Deschutes River - Lower - May 11th, 2008
RECORDED:    67 °    FISHING: Good
MADRAS  4820 CFS

The fishing seems to be picking up, more and more march brown are showing up. Still not tons of dry fly action but some. The last three days from warmsprings to Maupin was good.  The farther we got down the river the more bugs and consistant hatches we saw, I even spotted a two SALMON FLIES.  Another couple of days of warm weather the march browns should be going real good. If you hit the march brown hatch good it can be a very exciting hatch, with lots of fish and not a lot of people around.

With this warmer weather watch out the salmon flies will be here before you know it.

Good luck

Deschutes River - Lower - May 2nd, 2008
RECORDED:    61 °    FISHING: Good
MADRAS  4150 CFS

The deschutes river is flowing at a great level for fishing  right now. The fishing on the overnight stretch of the deschutes from trout creek to harpham flats was fishing good the last few days.  Some BWO's and some march browns were coming off in the warm part of the day. As the river warms up there should be more and more march brown coming off, making the fish happier and happier. If the fish aren't eating the dry fly don't be affraid to put a dropper fly on behing, this can help tons if the fish are being fussy to the dry fly.

Good luck out there

Deschutes River - Lower - April 29th, 2008
RECORDED:    42 °    FISHING: Fair
MADRAS  4230 CFS

The fishing has slowed down a fair bit since opening day from Warmsprings to Trout Creek.  Its still not to bad of fishing and there are still some mayflies coming off,  but its not red hot. One real nice thing is ever since the weekend has left us, so have the crowds.

We are going to do the overnight stretch Trout Creek down for the next few days to see how the fishing is down a bit farther down the river. Sounds like there has been some good march brown hatches coming off in the middle of the day when the wind is being to nasty crazy.

 ITS ABOUT TIME

The Whole Lower deschutes river is now open.

Right now the river is at a great level, so go while you can if we get a bunch of hot weather and or rain watch out who knows what the river might do with all that snow we have.

I wasn't able to get down to the river today but I talked to a few people today and they all said it was good to great fishing. It was mainly nymphing with a little dry fly action in the middle of the day. A few march browns and a few bigger caddis came off.

From the sounds of it the crowds weren't to bad either for opening day.

Now that the river is open, this generally means that the big bugs (salmon fly) are only about a month away. This is when things get real interesting on the deschutes the fish eat and eat and eat. If you haven't fished this hatch before you should give it a shot someday.

Good luck out there.

Deschutes River - Lower - April 13th, 2008
RECORDED:    75 °    FISHING: Fair
With all the beautiful weather showing up for the last couple of days, it has all but shut down our hatches. There were still a few BWO kicking around yesterday but not many.  Nymphing was good with some P.T. and Princes, but very little dry fly action.

With the weather changing again in the next few days it should help our cause and the bugs. They say rain is a comin and BWO love that stuff.

Deschutes River - Lower - April 7th, 2008
RECORDED:    47 °    FISHING: Good
The season for the upper half of the river is less than a month away it opens on April 26th.  Until that time the lower river has been pretty good of late. With the clouds around today there was a pretty good BWO hatch coming off and some small caddis #16ish and some biggers ones #12ish. The hatches came off strong when the wind wasn't blowing to crazy out of control. Before the hatches the fish were eating emergers good. The rest of the day before and after the hatch has been like it has for the past few months nymphing the riffles.  Keep an eye on the weather the cloudy days seems to be the days we get the best hatches right now.

Good luck out there

Deschutes River - Lower - March 11th, 2008
RECORDED:    54 °    FISHING: Good
The fishing down by Maupin has been good of late. With these warm sunny days there have been some good caddis hatches coming off, about a size 12. When the clouds return which sounds like that will be tomorrow be ready to fire the blue wings again. The riffles have been the best bet of late but when the blue wings show up don't count out the back eddies. The warmest part of the day seems to be when the fishing has been the best. Nymphing the riffles just before and just after the hatch has also been good and at times very good.

Don't forget that the river is still closed until you get off the Warm Springs Indian Reservation which is north or about 17 miles down river of Trout Creek

Good Luck out there

Deschutes River - Lower - March 2nd, 2008
RECORDED:    45 °    FISHING: Good
The blue wing olive hatch today was a real good one, the cloudy weather sure got those bugs good and excited. The bugs came off around 2:00 today and lasted strong for about an hour. Still keep your eyes on the riffles before and after the hatches, they are a good bet especially this time of year. Keep an eye out for the cloudy day and make a run for the river.

If you go out fishing remember that you must be below the or north of the Warm Spring indian reservation.

Deschutes River - Lower - February 19th, 2008
RECORDED:    51 °    FISHING: Good
Trout fishing is closed until the you get to north end of the warm springs indian reservation.  If you go down by Maupin there has been some fairly good may fly hatches going on.  Look to fish them in the warmest parts of the day. The hatches should get better the later it gets in the month and on those cloudy days.  The hatches generally last for about an hour to an hour and a half. Before the hatch throw some nymphs in the riffles, since the there are not tons of big long crazy hatches coming off there should be plenty of fish in the riffles chowing up every bug that comes along.

Deschutes River - Lower - November 17th, 2007
RECORDED:    52 °    FISHING: Good
MADRAS 4380cfs

Fishing is good but keep an eye on the flows as we have had a lot of rain lately. Still getting steelhead on floating lines. Water temps 52 in the warmth of the day and 48 in the morning. White river could blow any minute I would call the Deschutes canyon fly shop if you will be on the lower 40 miles of rive  below Maupin. Trout fishing is hit or miss. I bet the rain and bad weather will help.
